Fun places to learn photography

Fun places to learn photography With a world full of diverse scenes and sights, travel allows aspiring photographers endless opportunities to hone their skills. And whether it’s architecture or the natural world that gets you snap happy, the perfect destination is out there.

Of course, those with intermediate photography skills can venture out on their own and capture amazing images of exotic animals or spectacular landscapes, for example. But often aesthetically interesting places have tours run by experts, to help beginners cope in more tricky situations like low light or underwater.

Whether you’re on your own or with a specialist group, here are the Citybond Suretravel team’s favourite destinations for learning how to take amazing pictures.
Akureyri, Iceland

Akureyri, Iceland

Capturing spectacular images of the Northern Lights has got to be on any aspiring photographer’s bucket list. And Iceland’s second city Akureyri is one of the best places to view the Aurora Borealis, thanks to its geographical position and lack of light pollution. Of course, snapping pictures of the black sky streaked with vibrant green is something of a challenge, with its need to significantly adjust the camera’s aperture and shutter speed. Luckily there are a number of photography tours that run from Akureyri and lend you equipment, ensuring you have all you need to take a picture that will make your friends green with envy.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

If you’ve mastered photography on land and now want to widen your skillset to include underwater images, the Great Barrier Reef is a compelling place to start. The vibrantly colourful reef is so huge that you can pick the location that suits you best, based on interest and diving ability. Not comfortable with diving? With nothing more than a snorkel and a GoPro, you can get some incredible pics of the coral reef and its marine life: expect to see giant turtles, harmless sharks, tropical fish and octopi. For extra guidance, photography tours are available and many of these donate money to reef conservation too.
Berlin, Germany

Berlin, Germany

For urban photography you’ll struggle to find a city more vibrant and diverse than Berlin. The remnants of its fascinating history, eclectic architecture and bohemian residents are just three reasons why the city is a photographer’s dream, though the colourful graffiti on what’s left of the Berlin Wall is also a draw. Wander around the hip Kreuzberg for some extremely Instagrammable pics or head to the Reichstag to gaze upon its distinctive glass dome. There are specialist photography tours available, but if you don’t need much guidance, opt for a free walking tour and simply snap as you go.
The Inca Trail, Peru

The Inca Trail, Peru

If the great outdoors is your thing, the Inca Trail is a beautiful location in which to improve your landscape photography and work on your hiking skills too! To hone in on the right locations and settings for postcard-perfect pictures, take a photography hiking tour with experts. While supporting hikers on the trail, they explain how to make the most of the scenery too. There’s certainly no shortage of subject matter en route, with plenty of wildlife, greenery and crumbling Inca ruins to capture – you might even spot a donkey or two. The four-day hike is a test of endurance as well as photographic skills but as a finale efforts are rewarded with the stunning ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

The desert land of Namibia is the perfect location for aspiring wildlife photographers to improve their skills. There are a plethora of safari options providing you with the chance to take once-in-a-lifetime snaps of exotic animals: ostriches, rhinos, springboks and jackals are just some of the creatures to see. Because of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it nature of wildlife photography, newer photographers will quickly learn to work with the right shutter speeds and aperture levels to take professional-level photos. For a special snap, opt for a hot air balloon or helicopter tour over the desert – this means you can take impressive bird’s eye pictures of herds of animals in their breath-taking habitat.
Wherever you plan to head on your travels it’s good to know that Citybond Suretravel is committed to providing you with the highest level of protection to ensure you are safe and secure 24 hours a day when away.
