Destinations for grandparents to take their grandchildren

Destinations for grandparents to take their grandchildren When it comes to travel trends, we’ve noticed it’s increasingly popular for grandparents to take their grandkids away for some extra special bonding time. Discovering a new place together while undertaking fun activities is a perfect way to strengthen a relationship and make enduring memories. So it’s extra important to make sure the holiday fits the bill.

For example, the destination has to have activities to interest both the older and the younger members of the party. It also helps when the aesthetic of the place is striking – that way, the resulting photographs will make the parents at home dead jealous! For these reasons and more, here are the Citybond Suretravel team favourite places for grandparent-grandchild trips.
The Alps, Switzerland

The Alps, Switzerland

A hugely popular destination in Europe, The Alps are a family-friendly paradise that offers numerous holiday activities for grandparents and their grandchildren. The Swiss part of the mountain range is well-known for its winter sports, as well as its summer hikes and bike trails suitable for all ages. There’s plenty of villages to explore, like Gstaad, with its cool suspension bridge that has views of Mont Blanc, and the more accessible Rigi, which has great walks and a mineral-water spa in Hotel Rigi Kaltbad. Most railways in the area welcome kids under a certain age to ride for free and mountain playgrounds are spread throughout the region – perfect to entertain younger children.
Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean

Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean

For cross-generational groups wanting to experience the tropics while enjoying the familiarities of home, a trip to the British Overseas Territory of Turks and Caicos Islands is ideal. With sandy beaches, family-friendly resorts and age-inclusive nature activities, everyone from the grandparents to young children will have something to do. Taylor Bay, a clear-watered bay with hundreds of yards of shallow water, is particularly good for allowing grandkids to play in safe waters while the grandparents lounge on the white-sand beach. Snorkelling, cave tours, golfing and boating are also favourite activities for visiting families.
Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya

Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya

Families after an adventurous trip will love visiting one of Africa’s richest wildlife areas, the Masai Mara Game Reserve. In south-western Kenya near to the Serengeti National Park, it offers an educational experience perfect for all ages. Ride with a local guide in a purpose-built 4x4 to be told the background to the reserve while spotting exotic wildlife like lions, elephants and giraffes. Afterwards, a visit to the nearby Masai villages is quite the cultural experience as it teaches visitors about the indigenous people and traditions of Kenya. The best time to visit for both the weather and wildlife is late June to October.
National Park Galičica and Ohrid, Macedonia

National Park Galičica and Ohrid, Macedonia

Near Macedonia’s borders with Albania and Greece, the National Park Galičica is ideal for grandparents who want to show their loved ones how beautiful the world can be. Within its 88 square miles, the nature-rich park packs in more than 1,000 species of flora and is flanked by two pristine Balkan lakes: Lake Prespa and Lake Ohrid, one of the deepest lakes in Europe. The UNESCO-protected town of Ohrid is worth a visit in its own right: it has 365 beautiful churches that dot the town with a historical beauty. Head there in July and August for even more to do: it’s when the Ohrid Summer Festival takes place, with a full schedule of entertaining theatre and music shows.
The Rocky Mountains, USA

The Rocky Mountains, USA

Home to one of the world’s most iconic backdrops and countless family-friendly activities, the Rocky Mountain region in the USA – in states including Colorado, Montana, and Utah – is an excellent destination for grandparents to take the grandkids. During the summer months, groups can splash about in the hot springs, amble along scenic trails in the national parks and play a ball game or two in the parks. In the winter, there’s just as much fun to be had with skiing, sledding, shopping and best of all, hot chocolate and board games by the fire.
